Mom and I completed our first 5K this morning! We were 2 of about 4,000 women who were wearing running shoes and smiles at 7:00 am.

A blog post isn’t adequate to capture with words all of the specialness wrapped up in this day. It’s a memory I will always treasure. For months Mom and I have walked together in the evenings 2-3 times a week so when I heard about the Mother’s Day 5K I knew we had to do it together. It was a personal victory for her in more ways than one. She had surgery 3 months ago and has lost over 110 pounds in the past year! A year ago this race was only a dream…a nice idea…but today, it became reality!

From the buzz of excitement and anticipation as walkers and runners started to gather at sunrise to the surge of energy crossing the finish line it was a memorable event from start to finish. It was such an incredible experience and a special memory to create with my Mom and I will cherish forever how we spent this day together: putting health and fitness at the top of the priority list and cheering each other on as we talked and laughed together throughout the course.

One of the things I absolutely loved most about this 5K were the hundreds of husbands, boyfriends, sons, uncles and grandfathers standing on the sidelines throughout the course…not just cheering on the woman they were there to support but being cheerleaders of all the women in the race. It really kept the energy high to round the corner at a mile marker and hear someone’s 8 year old son yell “all the ladies wearin’ blue say HEY!” and then arms went up in the air and we yelled it back. Hearing words of affirmation from total strangers as they cheered us on was truly exhilarating. There were signs, posters and banners, noisemakers and cheering along the race course. One husband rang a cowbell and held up a poster for the entire race. When I heard the bell from about half a mile away I knew the finish line was close!

Mom and I already started planning this morning how we were going to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend next year…and a 5K is just the beginning.
